A formidable, hairy, ape-like monster with bared teeth and wide, staring eyes dominates the central part of this painting. Flanking it are several nude female figures: to the left, slender women with long, dark, serpentine hair, some holding golden chains or snakes. To the right, two figures with flowing red hair are depicted alongside a heavily pregnant woman, all adorned with rich, golden patterns. Above, ghostly, skeletal faces emerge from the dark, highly decorative background. This powerful allegorical work, part of Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze from 1902, showcases the artist's distinctive Symbolist style
