Camille Pissarro's winter landscape from 1866 features a resolutely dark and earthy palette, dominated by muted greens, browns, and a heavy, overcast sky that diffuses a cold, even light across the scene. The vibrant green of the foreground field, however, provides a striking visual anchor amidst the somber tones. In this large, rectangular canvas, Pissarro deliberately subverted traditional picturesque landscapes, applying paint heavily, often with a palette knife, a technique echoing Gustave Courbet. This contemplative work, painted just years before Pissarro embraced the Impressionist "en plein air" approach, would suit a study or a room that values quiet introspection.
