Ludolf Bakhuysen's 1702 oil on canvas masterfully employs a clear, luminous palette and subtle brushwork to depict a lively outdoor gathering. The canvas surface beautifully renders the expansive sky and the calm waters of the IJ, creating an atmospheric backdrop for the scene. This painting captures the Bakhuysen and de Hooghe families enjoying an al fresco meal on the Mosselsteiger, or Mussel Pier, in Amsterdam. Among the identified figures are Ludolf Bakhuysen, Johannes Bakhuysen, Anna de Hooghe, and Jan de Hooghe; some gentlemen are shown smoking Gouda pipes, while a young boy plays with a dog to the left. The bustling harbour, filled with sailing ships and boats
