In this vibrant composition, the oldest of the three Wise Men kneels before the Virgin Mary, who cradles the Christ-child in her lap. The infant Jesus raises a hand in blessing towards the king, who offers his gift with a humble gesture, while Joseph stands protectively nearby. Painted around 1560 by Pieter Aertsen, this oil on panel was originally the central section of an altarpiece depicting the adoration of the newborn Jesus. Its rich detail and narrative depth, characteristic of the Flemish Renaissance, would bring a contemplative focal point to a dining area or a classic study.
