In the mid-17th century, as the Baroque era embraced dramatic and often unsettling themes, Salvator Rosa created this oil on canvas, "Scene of Witchcraft," between 1645 and 1649. This circular painting, now part of The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, plunges the viewer into a grim dawn where a young witch, her face serene, stabs a writhing amphibian. The sky is heavy with dark clouds, and the craggy landscape takes on anthropomorphic, menacing forms. Malicious birds with sharp beaks encircle the central act, drawing the eye to the witch's brutal gesture. Rosa's enchantress, the only beautiful one he ever painted, possesses an elegance reminiscent of the goddess Circe
