This oil on canvas painting, created by El Greco between around 1595 and 1600, emerged from the fervent religious atmosphere of late 16th-century Toledo, Spain, where images of Saint Francis were exceptionally popular. It depicts the saint kneeling in profound prayer, his stigmata visible, before a crucifix and a skull - potent symbols of mortality and devotion that were central to the era's spiritual contemplation. A book nearby further alludes to his devotional studies. This work's intense focus makes it a compelling addition to a quiet contemplation space.
