A young man with unruly dark curls and round spectacles gazes directly at the viewer, his expression thoughtful. Dressed in a warm brown coat and a high-collared white shirt, he gently cradles a potted geranium in full bloom. This is Rubens Peale at seventeen, painted by his brother, the artist Rembrandt Peale, around 1795. Rubens's poor eyesight, evident from the two pairs of glasses-one worn, one resting on the table-did not deter him from pursuing a career as a painter later in life. This charming oil portrait would bring a touch of personal history and early American artistry to a quiet reading nook or a study.
