Tintoretto's oil on canvas technique, characteristic of the Venetian Renaissance, imbues this portrait with a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, and a tactile quality. Painted in 1567, it depicts seventeen-year-old Ottavio Strada in an unusual allegorical manner. He is shown receiving a cornucopia brimming with ancient coins from Fortune, while pointedly turning away from a statue of Venus. The gold and silver coins symbolize not only his future prosperity but also his scholarly pursuit of ancient numismatics, a field in which he was trained by his father
