This compelling bust-length portrait by Adriaen Thomasz. Key presents Jacob Bas Claesz, a prominent burgomaster of Amsterdam, at the age of fifty in 1586. The sitter, adorned with a full brown beard and an impressive white ruff, is depicted facing slightly to the right, yet his direct gaze engages the viewer. In the upper left corner, a heraldic shield displays his family's coat of arms, adding to the formality of the oil on panel painting. This work, a fine example of late 16th-century Flemish portraiture, was originally a pendant to another piece. Its sober palette and the subject's dignified expression make it a fitting addition to a traditional office or a quiet reading nook.
