Painted in 1830 by Charles van Beveren, this oil on panel portrait captures Carolina Frederica Kerst shortly after her return from a year-long stay in Rome. It is a revealing glimpse into her life, showing her seated with a letter in hand and a stylish hat, while elements in the background subtly reference her Italian journey. A framed landscape painting and a sculptural bust, which is a likeness of Carolina by her husband Louis Royer, allude to their trip abroad. The cross around her neck also clearly indicates her Catholic faith. This intimate and historically rich image would bring a touch of early 19th-century elegance to a quiet reading nook or study.
