This expansive family portrait by Dirck van Santvoort, painted in oil on canvas around 1634-1635, immediately draws the viewer's gaze to the interplay of light and shadow. The artist masterfully uses a predominantly dark palette, characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age, to highlight the luminous white ruffs and faces of the sitters. Burgomaster Dirck Jacobsz Bas and his second wife Margriet Snoeck are seated centrally, flanked by their children, including Machteld Bas with her husband Abraham de Visscher and their young son accompanied by a dog. Family coats of arms are visible in the upper corners
