The rich application of oil paint on canvas, characteristic of Jan Mijtens's work from 1657, imbues this family portrait with a luminous quality. The artist's deft brushwork renders the varied textures of silk and velvet, alongside the soft contours of human skin, creating a vibrant and lifelike scene. Govert van Slingelandt, Lord of Dubbeldam and pensionary of Dordrecht, is depicted with his first wife Christina van Beveren and their two young sons, Barthoud and Govert Johan. They are seated under a tree within a picturesque landscape; the elder son holds a bunch of grapes, while the younger child, nestled in his mother's lap
