Painted around 1776 by Anton Raphael Mengs, this oil on canvas portrait emerges from a period of profound social and political change in Europe, the Age of Enlightenment. It depicts Don Luis de Borbón y Farnesio, a younger son of King Philip V of Spain. Though initially holding significant religious offices like Archbishop of Toledo, his scandalous conduct led to his banishment from court. Paradoxically, this exile transformed him into a vital patron of avant-garde art, notably supporting Francisco Goya. Mengs skillfully uses the elaborate medals and luxurious fabrics to explore the representation of status and royal honors
