This oil on fabric painting by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, dating from around 1860-75, presents a serene landscape focused on a pond bordered by lush, leafy trees. The composition is bathed in a vaporous light, creating atmospheric effects through a restricted palette, characteristic of Corot's late style. A small peasant figure and a white goat add subtle life to the scene, echoing the artist's well-known depictions of Ville-d'Avray, a rural property he inherited in the western suburbs of Paris. This particular view of the large pond at Ville-d'Avray was once owned by the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle, Henrietta-Adela Hope. Its tranquil mood would complement a quiet study or a bedroom.
