Painted in 1893, during Paul Gauguin's second sojourn in Tahiti, this oil on jute canvas captures the artist's pursuit of an unspoiled, primal world. The portrait features Tehamana, a 13-year-old Tahitian girl, depicted with a stoic demeanor, her shoulders squared and gaze unwavering. She is adorned in a missionary dress, holding a Samoan fan, with white flowers cascading from her hair. A ripe mango positioned beside her subtly alludes to fertility. In the background
