The Virgin Mary cradles the Christ Child, who tenderly embraces his cousin, Saint John the Baptist, while Saint Margaret offers support. In the background, behind a low wall adorned with domestic and sacred objects, Saint Joseph observes the scene. Filippino Lippi, working with tempera and oil on wood around 1488-93, created this monumental piece for the Neapolitan cardinal Oliviero Carafa.
