In mid-1860s London, the American artist James McNeill Whistler was deeply engrossed in the aesthetics of Asian art. This oil on paper, mounted on panel, from 1865-66, depicts Whistler in his studio, palette and paintbrush in hand, observing the viewer. His personal collection of Japanese scrolls and Chinese porcelain is prominently displayed, reflecting his artistic influences. Whistler applied thin layers of muted paint, reminiscent of the flattened appearance of Japanese woodblock prints
