Pieter Jansz Saenredam's painting meticulously depicts the old town hall in Amsterdam, dominating the center of the composition. Small figures populate the square, some seated under the portico, others strolling, bringing the scene to life. Created in 1657, this oil on panel work was based on a drawing the artist made sixteen years earlier. By the time Saenredam completed it, the building shown had already been destroyed by fire and replaced by a new, monumental town hall. The painting was displayed in the mayoral chamber of the new building as a poignant reminder of the old one, making it a conversation piece for a traditional office or living room.
