Painted around 1595 by Caravaggio, this work exemplifies the innovative spirit of late 16th-century Rome, a period when the artist's dramatic naturalism began to challenge traditional artistic conventions. Such genre scenes, often imbued with allegorical meaning, were becoming increasingly fashionable. The canvas captures a group of young men, some with wings and grapes, engrossed in a musical gathering. A lutenist takes center stage, while others observe or read sheet music, with a violin resting nearby. Caravaggio’s signature use of chiaroscuro illuminates the figures and their intense expressions
