In the early 1890s, Edvard Munch delved into nocturnal scenes imbued with deep introspection, a period when he declared artists should depict "living people who breathe and feel, suffer and love." His 1893 oil on canvas, "Girl by the Window," captures a young girl peering out from a darkened room, drawing back a curtain. The scene is enveloped in deep shadows and melancholy tones of brown, blue, and violet, enhancing a sense of isolation and precariousness conveyed by the sharply tilted floor. The window functions as both a symbolic barrier from the outside world and a membrane
