In the vibrant milieu of early 18th-century Istanbul, Jean Baptiste Vanmour captured a pivotal diplomatic moment: the arrival of Dutch ambassador Cornelis Calkoen's retinue at Topkapi Palace. This oil on canvas painting, dating from around 1727-1730, meticulously depicts the unarmed delegation entering the second courtyard for an audience with Sultan Ahmed III on September 14, 1727. The scene is full of life, showing the Janissaries-the Ottoman elite fighting force-noisily lunging at dishes of rice, a traditional element of their payday. This detailed historical record would enhance a living room or office with a taste for historical narratives and cultural exchange.
