The expansive oil on canvas of this militia company portrait showcases a masterful handling of paint, with a lively brushwork that brings the figures to life. Completed in 1637 by Pieter Codde, this painting captures the members of Amsterdam's District XI Militia Company. Intriguingly, the work was initially commissioned to Frans Hals, whose distinct composition and seven figures on the left side are still evident, despite Codde finishing the piece. The varied techniques create a rich visual texture, making this Dutch Baroque work a striking focal point for a grand hallway or a sophisticated living room
