Frans Post’s oil on panel painting, executed between 1675 and 1680, displays a notably free and less refined brushwork, a departure from the meticulous detail of his earlier period. Thirty-five years after his eight-year residence in Dutch Brazil, Post revisited the tropical landscapes that defined his career, capturing a scene against a verdant meadow. The central feature is a structure that blends elements of a church and a Franciscan monastery, reminiscent of buildings found in coastal towns such as Igarassu and Ipojuca in the Pernambuco region. The figures and architecture are depicted with a spontaneous, almost summary quality
