This oil on canvas by Francesco Guardi captures a significant historical moment in late 18th-century Venice. Painted around 1783, it depicts one of the final events of Pope Pius VI's visit to the lagoon city. Within the magnificent audience hall of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Doge, dressed in gold and white, approaches the papal throne to receive a blessing. A line of red-robed senators follows in his wake, adding to the grandeur of the scene. Guardi's atmospheric style brings to life the solemnity of this official ceremony, making it an ideal piece for a formal dining room or a study.
