In the late 19th century, around 1890, Pierre-Auguste Renoir often found inspiration in his personal life and the tranquil settings of Essoyes, in eastern France. This oil on fabric painting captures a tender family moment: Renoir's wife, Aline, is offered apples by a young country girl. A boy in a straw hat, possibly his nephew Edmond, and an unidentified girl with a ribbon in her hair are also present, bathed in soft, dappled sunlight. Renoir's characteristic fluid brushstrokes unite the figures and the landscape, while a playful, leaping dog injects humor and motion into the otherwise serene scene. The artist's use of repetitive, light-of-touch brushstrokes creates patches of color
